I didn’t want the cost and complexity of a smartwatch but this works a treat as a reliable gps unit when conditions make a smartphone unreliable (cold, rain, wind). It’s button/joystick controlled (easy to operate in gloves or mitts), no touch screen to go wrong, no Garmin account needed, which are all a strength, and lasts a good 30 hours in gps using lithium AA batteries. Gps (2 satellites) is really good for a unit this price (Garmin do bigger, better, more expensive ones) and locks on most of the time, the only time it has failed was when I started messing with the settings mid-walk, the unit chucked me out of gps and as I was in woods it couldn't find a signal again when I restarted the unit. Luckily I knew where I was heading and gps kicked back in when I was out of the trees. But if you just want to follow a preloaded gpx track (via cable from your computer, no wireless) zoom in and out and record the route this works perfectly, and importantly isn’t affected by bad weather or freezing hands. I tend to plan a route on other software not directly in the unit itself, and load it in. If it is on and has a gps signal this thing is always recording, so remember to clear both track and trip just before recording a new walk and remember to save the track when you finish (it automatically gives it a date and time stamp). Altimeter works well but like similar devices it needs recalibrating each day usually at the start of the walk. Compass works well and needs far less calibration. Unit comes preloaded with Garmin active maps but these can be sparse and if you walk a lot in the UK hills you’ll definitely want to get OS Topo Pro maps which comes on a micro-SD which you can put in the SD slot in the back of the unit (another advantage over a watch where I don’t think you can load OS maps). The OS maps are expensive (more expensive than the unit itself!) but can come bundled with the unit for slightly reduced price, or search out cheaper prices to the RRP. I have 1:25k OS maps but to be honest I tend to stick at 1:50k because the screen is quite small (but still bigger than a large smartwatch) and also the maps are rasterised (not vector) which means zooming too far into 1:25k makes it pixelated but sometimes that level of detail is useful. An alternative to OS maps are the Talkytoaster ones which look very detailed, specifically for UK walking, and are a fraction of the price of OS maps. The gps unit has a joystick which is easy to use but I don’t think you can lock it, so if you are not careful you inadvertently set waypoints by knocking it, so I have a cheap 3d printed clip for the back of the unit so I can clip the whole thing onto my rucksack chest harness to keep it out the way. I use a cheap lanyard too (that I had already) as this thing is shaped and weighted like an old Nokia phone and despite having some grip looks a good candidate for dropping and disappearing down between rocks! Garmin do a backpack tether for the unit but it’s expensive and the set-up above works well. All in all I’m very pleased with this unit, and it complements OS maps on my iPhone (which is better to navigate with in good conditions but a liability higher up) and physical OS maps/compass which I always carry in my pack as backup. By the way, this unit and its harness clip squeeze perfectly into an Alpkit padded cell 1 to protect and store.

Il GPS Garmin è diventato il mio compagno di viaggio indispensabile! L'ho utilizzato in diverse avventure all'aperto, e posso dire con certezza che è incredibilmente preciso e affidabile. La cartografia dettagliata e la facilità di utilizzo mi hanno permesso di orientarmi anche in ambienti sconosciuti e difficili, come nelle zone più remote e impervie. La batteria dura a lungo e il dispositivo è robusto, perfetto per sopportare le condizioni di viaggio più dure. Un supporto essenziale, che offre una sicurezza in più in ogni tipo di escursione. Consigliatissimo per chi cerca un GPS che non ti tradisce mai!

Ho dovuto mettere una scheda di memoria da 32 giga per gli aggiornamenti delle mappe, quella da 8 non andava bene. La batteria dura abbastanza, è lento a dare la direzione, però è preciso. Buono per andare a funghi e segnare i posti, adesso lo sto usando su una bici. L’aggiornamento mi dà tutti gli indirizzi e qualsiasi posto dove andare in città (bar, banche, posteggi e posti turistici e tant’altro ancora). Si collega subito ai satelliti, ma se era più veloce con la mappa sarebbe stato perfetto.

Semplice da usare, buone funzionalità (bussola, uso dei waypoint, computer di viaggio, geocache, etc).Supporta schede SD max 32Gb (perché supporta solo la FAT32) e la sd non è compresa.Il fatto che lo schermo non sia touch credo sia un pro, dato l'utilizzo che se ne dovrebbe fare.Il segnale GPS è abbastanza preciso ma, come sappiamo, la precisione e la velocità di recupero del segnale dipende anche da vari fattori.Lascio 3 stelle, perché ci sono cose che assolutamente non mi sono piaciute:1. il fatto che per aggiornarlo devo per forza connetterlo al pc col suo cavo al software Garmin Express. Potevano pensare di fargli autogestire gli aggiornamenti tramite wifi...2. il dover alimentarlo usando due pile AA, alcaline o ricaricabili. Cercavo un GPS che mi accompagnasse nelle mie escursioni ed ho provato Etrex. Utile, dinamico e molto pratico. Replica il software dei GPS più strutturati, con la facilità di uso in qualsiasi condizione meteo. L'ho provato con il freddo, sotto la pioggia e con il sole pieno ed è sempre stato preciso e affidabile. Un ottimo rapporto qualità/prezzo per un utile strumento di lavoro

Ich habe mir die schlechten Bewertungen durchgelesen und kann nur behaupten, dass diese Menschen einfach nicht verstanden haben, wofür ein GPS Gerät gedacht ist und mit einem Smartphone eigentlich nicht viel gemein hat. Ein Smartphone ist für die Stadt super. Ein GPS Gerät für die Natur und Abenteuer draußen. Auch ist ein GPS Gerät für die Orientierung gedacht und nicht als Navi wie im Auto. Man sollte daher doch in Orientierung geübt sein und auch etwas Ahnung in Kartenkunde habe. Ich persönlich komme mit dem Gerät hervorragend zurecht. Die Karten sind für die Orientierung mehr als ausreichend und lässt sich auch bei starker Sonneneinstrahlung gut ablesen. Die Menüführung ist gewöhnungsbedürftig und man muss sich damit beschäftigen. Man kann sich aber alles super einrichten, um dann wirklich schnell auf das gewünschte zugreifen zu können. Klar ist es kein Smartphone und hat daher auch kein Display aus dem Hause Samsung. Dafür ist es robust und auch der Strom geht einem nicht so schnell aus. Ich nutze das Garmin auch in der Rettungshundeorganisation für die Orientierung bei Suchen und kann es daher nur empfehlen. Ich frage ich wirklich, ob diejenigen, welche eine schlechte Bewertung da gelesen haben, das Gerät wirklich fürs Wandern gekauft haben oder gar nicht so die Naturmenschen sind? Also eigentlich die falsche Zielgruppe sind.

Il gps è arrivato entro i tempi previsti.E’ un buon oggetto, è preciso e intuitivo.All’interno del Garmin sono già presenti le mappe italiane, in ogni caso è possibile aggiungerne di nuove. Le mappe presenti sul gps (sentieri italiani e strade europee) riempiono la memoria interna (8 Gb), se non si vogliono eliminare le mappe già presenti si deve aggiungere una scheda sd.Io ho aggiunto le mappe di open street map, il formato osm non sarebbe compatibile con il Garmin, si trovano però le mappe osm già convertite per garmin (formato img), per cercarle è sufficiente scrivere su google “mappe osm per garmin”, altrimenti esistono dei programmi che ne consentono la conversione (per esempio mkgamp).Su alcune recensioni avevo letto che con linux non è possibile aggiungere le proprie mappe e i propri gpx su questo modello (etrex32x), in realtà non è vero, io ho Ubuntu 18.04 e ho esportato sul gps sia le mie tracce che le mie mappe, è sufficiente collegarlo tramite usb e accedere alla sua memoria.Per aggiungere le mappe è necessario copiare i file img nella cartella Garmin (nel caso si utilizzi una scheda sd e questa cartella non esista è necessario crearla), per aggiungere le tracce è necessario copiare i file gpx nella cartella Garmin/GPX.
